might recognize this story from the Scandinavian story about the man
and the troll. What’s important to understand is that while Russia and
the Rest of Europe influenced each other Russia was at a cross roads
between Asia and Europe. So what would be trolls or the devil in
European fairy tales might be an animal in Russian fairy tales just as
would likely occur in Asian countries.
Man went into the forest to plant some turnips, and was in the process of plowing his fields when a bear walked up to him. “I’ll eat you,” the bear threatened. “Don’t
eat me bear for it would be better for us to sow the turnips together
and then when harvest comes you can have all the turnip tops and I’ll
have all the roots,” the farmer told the bear. “Very well,” the bear agreed. “But don’t fool me within my forest.” And with that the bear went into the grove. The turnips grew big and when autumn came the man entered the forest to dig up the turnips when the bear came out of the grove. “Give me my share of the turnips,” the bear told the man. “Ok,”
the man agreed as he gave the bear the turnip tops before loading the
turnips into a cart to sell in town. On his way into town he ran into
the bear again. “Where are you going?” the bear asked him. “I’m going into town to sell the roots,” the man told the bear. “Let me try the root,” the bear demanded. Once the man had complied and the bear ate the root the bear roared with anger: “you’ve deceived me, your roots are so sweet. The
second year the man planted rye instead of turnips and when the bear
came to demand his share the man promised him all the roots. When
autumn came and they gathered the rye the man took only the tops and
left the roots for the bear. But the bear struggled to eat the roots
but in the end could not and grew angry with the man and from that day
to this there has been an enmity between bear and man.
