Russian Fairy Tales
Drekavac A
Russian Monster which is formed from the souls of children who died
without being baptized. They have many forms, often appearing as a dog
or a fox with elongated hind legs which they can walk about on but they
may also appear as a small child. They may also appear as a bird (a
common form for the souls of dead humans) or as a spindly monster with
a giant head. No matter the form they all make a horrifying call, and
come out at night being most commonly seen during the twelve days of
Christmas which are traditionally a time for spirits in European
mythology. The Drakavac can be somewhat equated to the bogyman as a
monster which is used to scare children so that they won’t wonder into
the dangerous wilderness or be naughty
