Russian Fairy Tales
Samodivas Woodland
Fairies which appear as ethereal maidens with long loose hair (a symbol
of their freedom) and very occasionally as having wings. They dress in
a shirt and gown with a green bell, and magical features which allow
them to fly. Like most such maidens throughout Europe they are a form
of water spirit or fairy able to bring rain or drought. They also love
to dance, a dance often witnessed by travelers in the wilderness.
Should any join in their dance they will die of exhaustion at dawn when
the samodivas vanish.
